Dogs were kept in the home and were treated in much the same way by caring families as they are today. (91)ĭogs are depicted in Mesopotamian art as hunters but also as companions. Although the expression `vicious dog' occurred, `dog' as a derogatory term was little used. The dog was often the companion of gods of therapeutics. The sources distinguish numerous sub-breeds, but we can only partially identify these. As far as we can tell, there were only two main breeds of dog: large greyhounds which were used primarily in hunting, and very strong dogs (on the order of Danes and mastiffs), which in the ancient Orient were more than a match for the generally smaller wolves and, for that reason, were especially suitable as herd dogs. Of course, the dog was also a carrion eater, and in the villages it provided the same service as hyenas and jackals. Despite the fact that dogs roamed freely in the cities, the dog in the ancient Orient was at all times generally bound to a single master and was cared for by him. The dog (Sumerian name, ur-gi Semitic name, Kalbu) was one of the earliest domestic animals and served primarily to protect herds and dwellings against enemies.

It is believed that this distribution might have resulted from the glaciation cycles during the Pleistocene, which caused the parent population to split into isolates which subsequently re-expanded their ranges when the climate warmed causing secondary contact. orientalis, are two very closely related species the geographic distributions of both forms of carrion crow across Europe are illustrated in the accompanying diagram. The carrion crow ( Corvus corone) and hooded crow ( Corvus cornix), including the former's slightly larger allied form or race C. Juvenile carrion crows can be identified by their brownish plumage and blue eyes, both of which darken to black and brown as the crow grows older.ĭistribution and genetic relationship to hooded crows Ī map of Europe indicating the distribution of the carrion and hooded crows on either side of a contact zone (white line) separating the two species As well as this, the wings of a carrion crow are proportionally shorter and broader than those of the rook when seen in flight. The beak of the crow is stouter and in consequence looks shorter, and whereas in the adult rook the nostrils are bare, those of the crow are covered at all ages with bristle-like feathers. There is frequent confusion between the carrion crow and the rook, another black corvid found within its range. The carrion crow has a wingspan of 84–100 centimetres (33–39 in) and weighs 400–600 grams (14 oz – 1 lb 5 oz). It can be distinguished from the common raven by its size of around 48–52 centimetres (19–20 in) in length as compared to an average of 63 centimetres (25 inches) for ravens, and from the hooded crow by its black plumage. The plumage of the carrion crow is black with a green or purple sheen, much greener than the gloss of the rook. brachyrhynchos) in North America.Īdult male carrion crow moulting at the Jardin des Plantes of Paris. The hooded crow, formerly regarded as a subspecies, has been split off as a separate species, and there is some discussion whether the eastern carrion crow ( C. The binomial name is derived from the Latin corvus, "raven", and Greek κορώνη korōnē, "crow". The carrion crow was one of the many species originally described by Carl Linnaeus in his landmark 1758 10th edition of Systema Naturae, and it still bears its original name of Corvus corone.
Slay a Jotun, though, and players will be rewarded with a healthy portion of souls. The battles with Jotun are some of Tribes of Midgard’s most interesting, though they happen a bit too frequently, becoming more of an annoyance over time. Jotun are a big threat to the player if left to their own devices, easily knocking down the player’s fortifications if they manage to make it to the camp. The Jotun are massive elemental creatures that spawn a fair distance away from the player’s camp, slowly lumbering towards them, hell-bent on taking out The World Tree. The real stars of the show are the Jotun that will invade the world every few days. Most large camps will have mini-bosses for players to tackle, which can spike up the difficulty pretty sharply if players go in under-prepared. However, the game also includes bigger, more challenging enemies for players to tackle. Standard rank-and-file enemies pepper the overworld, usually in the form of goblins and wolves. Tribes of Midgard’s combat system isn’t particularly complex, but there’s at least some beauty in its simplicity. Tribes of Midgard does feature a way to build ramps and bridges, but it’s all too easy to get stuck in one of the structure’s cracks.īesides exploring the overworld, players are going to spend most of their time battling monsters. It’s possible to jump up or down these jagged slopes, but it isn’t a smooth way to get around obstacles. Many of the game’s mountains and hills use a tiered system, rather than a smooth ramp-up. On top of not feeling particularly unique, the game’s handling of different elevations leaves a lot to be desired. The issues with the game’s world don’t end there, either. That freedom to explore is welcome, but Tribes of Midgard‘s randomly generated maps aren’t all that varied. Players are granted the freedom to roam around and collect nodes of resources, which are essential to building up the player’s home base and guaranteeing that they survive beyond the first few nights. It boasts the Norse flavor that’s become increasingly common in games over the past few years, opening its lore up to comparisons with the likes of Assassin’s Creed Valhalla and God of War.ĭuring daylight hours, Tribes of Midgard plays similarly to the classic Legend of Zelda games, giving players an open field to explore with enemies and bandit camps scattered throughout. Tribes of Midgard puts players in control of heroes sent from the heavens tasked with defending The World Tree from assault almost every night, using each day as an opportunity to gather resources and build up their defenses. Eugen takes the “Wargame” moniker quite seriously, and this game more closely resembles a fast-paced tabletop wargame than most video game RTSes. If you are new to Wargame, it is best to approach it like a new experience, and not to rely on the lessons learned in other games. If you play it like you play other RTS games, you will get your ass kicked. It is absolutely nothing like Starcraft or C&C. You can expect this game to be lovingly supported with balance patches and even free DLC, just like the games that came before it, Wargame: European Escalation and Wargame: AirLand Battle. These guys are pretty damn good developers, all things considered. Wargame: Red Dragon is a real time strategy (RTS) game made by developers Eugen Systems. So, welcome to Wargame! Let’s start off by discussing the important questions - “What’s a Wargame? Is it like Starcraft or Command and Conquer? Red Dragon is a stupid name, do the developers not speak English very well or something?” In-Game Etiquette, Flares, and Team Communications Offense and Strategic ObjectivesĬontrol Groups, Order Queueing, Keyboard ShortcutsĪircraft Maneuvering, Handling, and Response Times If you remember my previous guide to Wargame: AirLand Battle, you probably need no introduction to this guide and can skip ahead - many of the basics carry over from ALB. Many of the claims and opinions expressed in this guide are not hard-and-fast rules, but rather general statements that may have some exceptions. This is intended to be a layman’s guide to hopefully shorten that period between being a total noob and beginning to master the game. Objective information is general ly presented first, with subjective and opinionated input in italics. This guide is primarily formatted by in-game section. Many of those folks helped me out with staging screenshots or just general input, advice, and experience - so thanks goes out to all of them! Welcome! I was begged to write this guide by the noobs of the /vg/ Wargame General Steam group chat. I’m pretty sure “sound bite” is the mondegreen. Therein you find the humor of the phrase “sound byte” as a small chunk of information. “Byte” was coined in the 1960s–in reference to a very small unit of digital data when 64 bytes of data storage was rather large. I have never seen “nickle” used, and the origins probably explain why. The misspelling is probably to force the “e” to be at the end of the word, like “byte” and “nybble”. Reported among developers for Mattel’s GI 1600 (the Intellivision games processor), a chip with 16-bit-wide RAM but 10-bit-wide ROM. The Jargon file’s nickle entry says it is so derived: Marinoff’s explanation of its etymology strikes me as an ad hoc rationalization made after the fact.Ĭommentary by Ann Burlingham, 0 at 2:23 pm I forgot to add: if the OED is correct, and I’m inclined to believe that it is, that the phrase “sound bite” first appeared in print in 1980, I don’t think it’s likely that its origins had anything to do with digital storage. Anything more than that, you’re losing them” (emphasis mine). The OED cites the 22 June 1980 Washington Post for the first use of the phrase: “Remember that any editor watching needs a concise, 30-second sound bite. edited into a news report on account of its aphoristic or provocative quality transf., a phrase or sentence intended by its speaker to be quoted in this way.” U.S., a brief extract from a recorded interview, statement, etc., usu. In 1993, “sound bite” was added under “sound” with this definition: “orig. You’ll be happy to know that the Oxford English Dictionary agrees with you. I think but cannot conclusively prove that Marinoff and other defenders of this eggcorn are mistaken about the origins of “sound bite” I remain confident that it predates readily-available digital storage of sound by some time, and in any event a single byte is not very much information at all, and definitely not enough space to store, say, a 10 or 30-second sound recording from a politician or talking head. The proper name, whos refcerence bears the intended sense, is the homonym “sound-byte.” In the technical language of digital computing, a “byte” is a chunk (or word) of data, typically eight bits in length, which is processed as a single unit of information. You think you know what this means, don’t you? If so, then you probably understand its reference, but not its sense. My pet homonymic peeve-again symptomatic of a culture rendered senseless by fuzzy speech-is named “sound bite”. It was immediately noticed and commented upon.Ĭuriously, while googling for a book using the term, I found it used and defended in “Philosophical Practice” by Lou Marinoff: I have actually used this myself at least once that I know of: a few years ago I was a regular on an Australian media-watching newsgroup and inadvertently used the eggcorn to ask for more information about something I’d seen the night before. “Sound byte” seems to me to be born of our increasinly digitized world it’s probably more common online than offline. It doesn’t help any that “byte” itself is a pun on “bite” and is accompanied by “nybble” (for five four bits) and a few other words in the same vein.
